The Ocean
A Blooming 9-Patch Kit
Don't you feel as if you're standing on a beach looking out into the ocean with these fabric color combos?! When we look at them we just see the waves moving back and forth, to and fro. In fact we decided to place Ocean View in two spots within the quilt. We even think if you wish to fussy cut it for those 4 1/4" squares. well we added a bit more fabric to the kit so that you can. Most of these fabrics come from McKenna Ryan's Sand in My Shoes collection for Robert Kaufman. We think this would make a lovely Blooming 9-Patch.

The colors are blues, cream with a touch of brown. The center of the quilt starts with the fabric on the left and blooms outward towards the right.

About the Fabric Kit: Total yardage for this particular kit is 10 3/4 yards to allow you to fussy cut the 2 rows using Ocean View, as well as including the binding. We give you an extra 1/8 yard of each fabric so you will have plenty! Why not add the perfect thread to sew it together: Aurifil Thread - 1422 yards. If you haven't tried this thread yet, it is the perfect opportunity. The fabric on the far right is the center of the quilt or fabric #1 if you are looking at the pattern in the book.

Enlarge to a Queen Sized Bedspread, you will want to add a 4” to 6” border before adding the binding. It will require an additional 1 1/2 yards for the border.

Fabric Kit does NOT include the Pattern! The pattern is in the book Traditions With a Twist, so if you don't have the book you will have to buy it.

By the way, this pattern takes advantage of rotary cutting and strip piecing for template free quiltmaking and we highly recommend the Cutting Edge Tool for error free strip cutting. With them, make every cut perfectly the same without thinking!!!

Block 2
Block 2 was created by Me & My Sister Designs. No Triangles here in this one, phew. Remember this Mystery Shuffle is not only a fun program to see what you eventually will create, but it is also a great way for new quilters to learn how to put a quilt together.

First, if you don't use the fabrics we suggest for our Block 2 kit, then be sure to pull out of your own stash a dark, medium and light piece. What can be fun with any of these blocks is playing around with the different fabric values. Put them one way - you get one look. Put them a different way and look how the block changes. Again, it doesn't matter. Make the block the way you want it to look.

So this is a great opportunity for you to pay attention to your strip cutting. When you cut is your fabric edge on the inside or outside, or right on the line on the ruler? It doesn't matter, but the key here is to stay consistent throughout this whole quilt. The other key is to use the same ruler because sadly there can be variations in the markings between different brands.

The same applies when sewing your 1/4" seam - do you consistently place your fabric on the inside, outside or right on the line marking on your machine. Again, it doesn't matter, just be consistent.

Also pay attention to your pressing. Generally the standard rule of thumb is to press both seams to the darker fabric. However if you are going to have many seams come together, you may wish to press your seam open. That helps to reduce the overall bulk.

Here are some suggested tools:

• We're so happy to see this product! It is my favorite tool. It lives on my machine to help me sew a straight line. I truly can't live without it - Sew Straight. And for Block 2 this would be invaluable.
• Or you might like to use the Qtools Sewing Edge. These are acrylic strips that you can lay right onto your sewing machine. The strip is thick enough so that you can guide your fabric through without it slipping over the edge. This again should help with seam allowance accuracy.

If you missed the free download for Block 2, don't worry. It will be available again for purchase after we are through with the program.

These are the fabrics we will send for this block.

Block 4
Block 4 is created by V and Co.

Haha - another block without any Triangles! Remember this Mystery Shuffle is not only a fun program to see what you eventually will create, but it is also a great way for new quilters to learn how to put a block, then a quilt together.

First, if you don't use the fabrics we suggest for our Block 4 (see below), then all you will need are just 2 pieces. One should definitely be a light, the 2nd piece could be a medium or a dark. What's fun about any of these blocks is playing around with the different fabric values. Put them one way - you get one look. Put them a different way and look how the block changes. On the pattern instructions, they will show you how the block would look if you use the colors one way or the other. Again, it doesn't matter. Make the block the way you want it to look.

Again this is another great opportunity for you to pay attention to your strip cutting.

However if you are going to have many seams eventually come together, you may wish to press your seam open (such as when making a pinwheel block). That helps to reduce the overall bulk.

Here are some suggested tools:

• We're so happy to see this product! It is my favorite tool. It lives on my machine to help me sew a straight line. I truly can't live without it - Sew Straight. And for Block 2 this would be invaluable.

Hexie Garden Quilt
Becky Goldsmith's newest book - Hexie Garden Quilt. This is an absolutely fabulous book. In it she suggests how to make one quilt. As you can see it is a quilt of hexagons. But don't let those hexagons fool or scare you. They are just too easy to make. They are not paper pieced, nor are there any Y seams!!!

Remember - Becky is one half of the "Piece 'O Cake" gals. Her designs are whimsical and she knows how to break it all down and make it all so easy to do.

These hexagons are wedges you sew together. Then you square up each hexagon block (by creating triangle pieces - she'll show you how) before sewing each of those together. So the designs are all appliqué onto each wedge. The wedges sewn together... The only English paper piecing you do is when you create those small hexagons you see in the quilt - but just to make those hexie flowers then you just appliqué those onto the top! See. Easy.

The book does include 9 different templates to make the hexagon flowers. It also includes a very modern bonus quilt project. Becky also shows you her appliqué, template making, and finishing techniques, i.e. how she does her binding.

So you can make the quilt, finished size is 61 1/2" x 69 3/4". Or we can see putting these hexagon blocks together as a table runner, each block measures approximately 16 1/2" x 19 1/4". The remaining hexagon blocks could be made into placemats, and duplicate the designs you like. Or maybe make the quilt a bit smaller (a small lap quilt/throw) and use three of the hexagon blocks for pillows. This pattern just seems so versatile.

Becky recommends using a 60 degree triangle ruler to make your hexagon pieces. Becky also says that truly purchasing hexagon templates really does make the work go faster. Why not try the Self-Stick reusable hexagon templates - you'll need 3/4" and 1/2". You might also consider a new pair of scissors such as Karen Kay Buckley's Perfect 6" scissor with the micro-serrated edge so that it will hold your fabric tightly as you cut out your appliqué pieces. Or how about our Appliqué Stiletto Tool Set to help you hold down edges or poke loose threads in as you hand sew.

Make these nine hexagons into one large quilt, 61 1/2" x 69 3/4" - or string 3, 4, or 5 together and make a table runner.

Simply a great book!

Hexie Garden Quilt Pattern & Kit
Becky Goldsmith has done it again! She has put together a new quilt that consists of appliqué on hexagons, done as wedges! So don't let the idea of a hexagon frighten you - she shows you how to put this all together that is easy peasy (oops isn't she one of the Piece O' Cake gals, no wonder :) ). And there are no 'y' seams either!

You'll find out how to do this in her book, Hexie Garden Quilt, that includes nine templates to make your floral hexagon blocks. Graphic, fast, and full of movement, these easy-to-piece wedge blocks are appealing to both traditional and modern quilters. This is truly a beautiful quilt that is perfect for beginners and non-beginners.

Finished quilt size is 61 1/2" x 69 3/4". Each of the nine Hexagon Blocks are approximately 17" x 19 3/4".

We've put a kit together - that includes everything you'll need to make the top and the binding EXCEPT for the appliqué pieces. Take a look at our larger picture to see what fabrics we'd send you in the kit. The pattern is not included and the backing is optional.

We're also offering you 2 different types of background fabric for these hexagons. One uses a bright Cobalt Blue, or choose a Navy. You pick.

HOWEVER if you prefer a different border/background color for your hexagon blocks - pick a color from our Grunge collection or from the Suede collection only. Either by telling us under the "special instructions" as you check out online, or send us a quick email - cotton@cottonclub.com. We can make the substitution if you let us know once you order the kit.

We have found out from those that have already begun working on this quilt that you will need a 60 degree triangle ruler. Becky suggests the Clearview 60 degree ruler.

We also suggest for the small hexies you will need to make - 1/2" and 3/4" - using the self-stick Gypsy Quilter Hexagon papers. For this quilt you certainly don't need to make a lot of small hexagons, but if we can save some prep work time - well the self-stick papers are a way to go.

A plethora of texture is what makes this Blooming 9-Patch gorgeous. Soft neutrals sing when combined together. These neutrals progresses into neutrals with a somewhat yellowish/gold cast. The center fabric is shown on the far right of the photo. Finished size without a border is 72" x 82".

Typically when we create a blooming 9-patch quilt kit, we begin with the center (the 1st piece on your left) and move the blooming colors to the outside (to the right). However, we noticed in this case you can move from either side - red to magenta, or magenta to red - left, right, bright!

About the Fabric Kit: Total yardage is 10 3/8 yards, including the binding.

Like the fabrics but don't want the kit? We sell 1/2 yard packs of the 8 pieces used in this kit!

Please note! Sometimes a fabric that is shown is not available and we will substitute. Substitutions will not alter the overall integrity of the Blooming 9-Patch design.

Block 30
Block 30 is designed by Blackbird Designs. As you can see it is our only other appliqué design in this quilt - haha. A cute flower.

So now you've at least done one appliqué block, here's your chance to try another. It is really easy too. There are no tight corners/angles to cut or sew (whether by hand or machine), and not a lot of layers either. The only possible challenging part here is the stem.

Tips/Tricks for beginners:

•First - very important - when you do put your appliqué pieces onto your 6 1/2" square - be sure that you place the flower on point! Just like the picture. This is critical - unless of course you do want one block to be out of sync in your quilt - which is also fine if you like that sort of thing ;)
•On the pattern instructions you'll see you've been provided templates. These are actual sizes of your pieces. Whether you prefer machine appliqué, raw edge appliqué or needle turn appliqué, you will need to trace these templates directly onto a fusible web, mylar plastic or freezer paper before placing them onto your fabric and cutting.
•Keep in mind before you cut your fabric pieces - if you are turning under the edges either with glue, starch or needle - the templates do not include seam allowance. Therefore when cutting out your fabric piece be sure to cut 1/4" further out from the edge of the template.
•One of our favorite appliqué designers is Karen Kay Buckley and she has developed quite a number of tools that you may find useful. What we especially love are her Perfect scissors. Her scissor blades are micro-serrated so it will hold onto your fabric well and cut those precise tight corners and circles.
•For the stem we will suggest a couple of tools that are helpful in creating stems, but I'll be honest here, in this particular block, these tools might not be necessary. Typically stems are cut on the bias so that the stem will curve more easily. There are several methods to show you how to make a stem - on the internet just look up appliqué stems, or bias appliqué stems. Helpful tools are Karen Kay Buckley's Perfect Stems, or The Perfect Bias Stems card, or some people have even found using a bias tape maker is helpful.
•There are so many tools and notions - check out our Appliqué Notions page - find products such as Roxanne's glue, one of our favorite are the 4-piece Stiletto tools, or how about a mini iron.

As before, we are not offering a kit, just pull from your stash. What you'll want to find in your stash is a 6 1/2" square of a neutral fabric. Then search your staff for the appliqué pieces. You won't need more than a 5" square (for the bird) and smaller for the wing and stars. Only 2 colors are used in the picture, but if you want more color greens for the stem and another for the leaf(ves), go for it. If you used a light neutral for the background, then find some medium or dark prints for the appliqué. If you used a dark neutral then be sure to use lights for the appliqué.

The free instructions are no longer available. But don't worry, if you forgot to download, they will be available again once the quilt is complete.

Block 22
Block 22 is designed by BasicGrey.

All right, here's a block that will test your skills in consistency and accuracy - haha. Here you will be sewing together 24 pieces in the typical Mystery Shuffle block size of a 6" square. In other words you will be cutting some pieces as small as 1 1/2" square. Now that's small! So if you are off even 1/16" in cutting, well, uh, that could cause some problems when piecing and pressing.

So we have a few tricks for you to help you with cutting and piecing accuracy and consistency:

• Use the Cutting Edge tool that you can place onto your ruler. These are reusable acrylic strips you place onto the bottom side of your ruler and then you can "butt" your fabric up against it for accurate and consistent cutting.
• This is one of my favorite tools. It lives on my machine to help me sew a straight line, as well as keeping me consistent. I truly can't live without it - Sew Straight.
• Or you might like to use the Qtools Sewing Edge. These are reusable acrylic strips that you can lay right onto your sewing machine. The strip is thick enough so that you can guide your fabric through without it slipping over the edge. This again should help with seam allowance accuracy.

And as always - play around with your colors. You can certainly place them all in a variety of ways.

Our kit will use the following fabrics:

Weren't able to download the pattern in time, don't worry, it will be made available again after the project is complete.

Block 17
Here is our first appliqué block. This is designed by Jan Patek Quilts. There are only a couple of them so for those that are not appliquérs don't worry, they're simple and easy to do. And if you really don't want to do it at all - then take one of the previous blocks you've already made and do it again - maybe swapping out the color values.

For those that may never have appliqued, this is really easy. There are no tight corners/angles to cut or sew (whether by hand or machine), and not a lot of layers either. So now is as good a time as any to learn.

Tips/Tricks for beginners:

•First - very important - when you do put your appliqué pieces onto your 6 1/2" square - be sure that you place the bird and surrounding stars on point! Just like the picture. This is critical - unless of course you do want one block to be out of sync in your quilt - which is also fine if you like that sort of thing ;)
•On the pattern instructions you'll see you've been provided templates of the star and the bird.
•There are so many tools and notions - check out our Appliqué Notions page - find products such as Roxanne's glue, one of our favorite are the 4-piece Stiletto tools, or how about a mini iron.

Surprise, surprise - we're not offering a kit for this particular block because the shipping would be more than the fabric. What you'll want to find in your stash is a 6 1/2" square of a lightish neutral fabric - a beige or white - is recommended - but hey, be different and use a dark neutral. Then search your staff for the appliqué pieces. You won't need more than a 5" square (for the bird) and smaller for the wing and stars. Only 2 colors are used in the picture, but if you want different colors for the stars, or whatever, go for it. If you used a light neutral for the background, then find some medium or dark prints for the appliqué. If you used a dark neutral then be sure to use lights for the appliqué.

At this time the pattern instructions are unavailable. They will be made available again when this program is completely over. Never fear.
